About the Book

Only those who rise to their calling discover why they were chosen.

A thousand years ago, an order of twelve magic swords kept the world at peace. Each sword had a personality, a mind, and a memory. Through the bonds they shared with their bearers, the wisdom and skill of generations was preserved.

But the swords became corrupted. They turned on each other, shattering the order and plunging the world into war. The twelfth sword went into hiding until the day of prophecy, when the last sword bearer would free the world of men.

That day has come, and the sword bearer of prophecy is a mere tavern girl.

Tamuna Leladze never sought for this honor. Raised by her aunt Sopiko, her only knowledge of foreign lands came from the travelers who passed through her aunt’s tavern. She always dreamed of adventure, but never thought she would answer its call.

But when a wandering knight arrives at the end of the harvest season, all that begins to change. The old knight is the keeper of the sword Imeris, who has chosen her in the eleventh hour. For far to the north, a terrible empire has unleashed a reign of blood, fire, and steel. Led by an evil brotherhood more ancient than the sword itself, their darkness will soon sweep the land.

As events carry Tamuna far from her village home, she cannot help but wonder if the sword has made a mistake.

Out Now: Gunslinger to the Stars!

Great news guys! My latest novel, Gunslinger to the Stars, is now out!

I really believe that this is the most entertaining book I’ve written to date. Definitely the funnest one to write. In some ways, it’s quite a bit different from my previous fare, but I think my readers will enjoy it nonetheless.

If you do get a chance to read it, I would greatly appreciate if you’d take the time to post a review. Now is the most important time for reviews to be posted, in the days and weeks immediately after release. It will also help me to decide whether and how soon to turn this into a trilogy If you can’t, no worries, but a huge thanks if you can.

Other than that, thanks for reading and enjoy!

First three chapters of Gunslinger to the Stars on InstaFreebie!

It is exactly one month before Gunslinger to the Stars goes live, but if you want to read the first three chapters, they are available right now on InstaFreebie.

If you’re unfamiliar with InstaFreebie, it’s a site where you can download free books by sharing your name and email with the author. Basically, you sign up for the author’s newsletter, and you get a copy of their book. You can browse by genre or author, too.

In addition to this giveaway, I’ll start posting short 300 word excerpts on my blog starting in about a week. I’m also going to publish a prequel short story in the next few days. And of course, you can pre-order Gunslinger to the Stars right now by following one of the links below!

GUNSLINGER TO THE STARS now up for pre-order!

Hi guys! Sorry to be out of the loop for a while. I have just made the pioneer trek of my ancestors, except in the wrong direction (from Utah to Iowa). Still getting settled in, but I should be more active from now on.

That said, I’m happy to report that Gunslinger to the Stars is now available for pre-order! It’s scheduled to release on May 19th, across all ebook platforms. For Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, and Smashwords, you can pre-order your copy now!

I’m super excited about this book. It’s my first novel since May 2016, and if it does well enough, I’d like to expand it into a trilogy. Either way, it’s definitely taken my writing in a new direction, and I think you’re really going to enjoy it. If I had to pitch it in one sentence, I’d say that it’s Monster Hunter International meets Guardians of the Galaxy.

Just a short post for now, but I’ll be sure to let you guys know what I’m up to as I get back into the swing of things. Thanks for reading!

About the Book

The name’s Sam Kletchka. Perhaps you’ve heard of me: captain of the Star Runner, military contractor for Earthfleet, and interstellar privateer. But before all that, I was a hired gun, freelancing across the galaxy one gunslinging job at a time.

This, my friends, is how I went from being stranded in the armpit of the galaxy to becoming the luckiest human being in the universe. Not that it was easy, of course. I’ve looked death in the face so often, he’s practically an old buddy of mine. But when all your worst enemies are immortal, that’s a buddy you want on your side.

Stay frosty, my friends. You never know what you’ll find at the next star.

Another one done!

The Sword Keeper
Phase:3.0 Draft
100%

It’s done! Draft 2.0 of The Sword Keeper is finished. Still need to run it by some test readers, but it’s looking very good for a release this year.

In other news, the power cable for my laptop decided to die. I’ll replace it eventually, but in the meantime, I’m going to try turning my phone into a writing device. Just got a K480 bluetooth keyboard and I’m excited to try it out. My phone is a device I’ve always got with me, so adapting it for writing could be really great.

I’m also going to try a new writing technique that should hopefully lead to cleaner (perhaps even publishable) first drafts. If it works, this could significantly increase my writing output. It involves cycling through yesterday’s words before writing any new ones, getting into the flow and making any changes as necessary. This is actually very close to how I used to write back in high school, before all those college English classes. I also get the sense that this is how Dean Wesley Smith writes.

All sorts of experimental new things going on with my next WIP, which is Edenfall. Yes, it’s time to complete the trilogy. But before I jump into it, I’m going to take some time to do some serious prewriting, in the hopes (again) of writing a clean first draft. Which, if it works, means that the book will be published that much sooner.

In the meantime, Gunslinger to the Stars is almost ready for publication. My editor is working on it now, the cover art is just about finished, and besides that all that’s really left is crafting the book description and metadata. If all goes well, it should be up for pre-order on iBooks, Kobo, Smashwords, and Nook before the end of the month.

Also, new short story!

My answer to Worldcon 2016, Sad Puppies, and the Hugo Awards

So Worldcon 2016 and the Hugo Awards happened over the weekend. It went down about how I expected it would: the award for Best Novel went to an outspoken racist, one of the most prominent female editors in the field lost (again) to No Award, and the TruFans and SJWs made the convention Safe for Diversity by silencing or evicting everyone who did not think, act, believe, or look like them.

In other words, it was a complete crapshow, and I’m glad that they didn’t get any of my money. Instead, I’ve decided to follow in the Grand American Capitalist Tradition by offering you an opportunity to give me your money instead.

That’s right: “Welcome to Condescension,” my Sad Puppies short story, is now available on all the major ebookstores. Check it out!

Two new stories!

Now that I’m back from Cape Cod, I’ve got two major projects that I’m focused on: finish the first draft of Captives in Obscurity (Sons of the Starfarers: Book V), and get Heart of the Nebula ready for publication in November. Those are some big releases, so you can expect to hear a lot in the coming months about them—especially Heart of the Nebula, which I’ve been working on for the past four years. Lots of exciting stuff!

In the meantime, I had two smaller releases in the past couple of weeks, and I think you guys are really going to enjoy them!

The first is the re-release of “A Hill on Which to Die,” an epic fantasy novelette about a band of free orcs trekking into the wilderness to start a new clan. This is my first real foray into fantasy, but I really enjoyed it and am thinking seriously about writing more books in this universe. If that sounds like something you’d like to see, then give this story a try and let me know what you think by posting a review or shooting me an email.

The second is a short story in the Star Wanderers universe. Longtime readers may recognize it as a story I wrote last year as part of the Short Blitz challenge“Starchild” is a quick read that takes place in a far-off corner of the universe, and shows what life is like on a tiny isolated space colony in the Far Outworlds.

This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as stories go. My goal is to have a new release at least every two months, with short stories in between the major novel releases. I’ve been averaging about one short story every month as far as writing goes, and it looks like quite a few of them are going to come off of the submission pipeline (either by getting picked up or by exhausting the pro/semi-pro markets) in the next year or so. This is all in addition to my novel writing, which hasn’t slowed down in any way from writing short stories.

So you can definitely expect to see more stories from me in the coming months! And as always, if you want to be the first to hear about a new release (as well as special offers and exclusives), then be sure to sign up for my email list.

Thanks for reading!

COMRADES IN HOPE is now out!

SSF-II (thumb)Hi guys! Great news! Comrades in Hope (Sons of the Starfarers: Book II) is now out as a $2.99 ebook! It’s available right now on Amazon, Amazon UK, and Smashwords, with Nook, Kobo, and iTunes soon to come.

This book was a blast to write. It continues the story of Isaac and Aaron, now separated, as the war with the Gaian Imperials begin to heat up. Aaron hasn’t forgotten the henna girl from Nova Alnilam, though, and he’s fighting as much to free her as he is to make a name for himself. But wars can be brutal, and this one is no exception.

If you enjoyed Brothers in Exile, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. And if you want a chance to revisit the universe of Star Wanderers, I think you’ll enjoy this series as well. The story is more of a space adventure than a romance, but all the same science fictional elements are in there, plus a few new ones.

I’m having a lot of fun writing this new series! Book three, Strangers in Flight, is just about finished–only two more scenes to write, then off to my first readers for their feedback. It should be out in August, with the first omnibus edition coming out September-ish. There’s going to be at least nine books in this series, though perhaps as many as twelve.

As always, if you enjoy this book, please take the time to post an honest and thoughtful review! Who knows but what you might help someone find their next favorite series? I’d post a review myself, but seeing as I’m the author that would be a little gauche. And I’m not the kind of writer who posts “buy my book!” all the time, so I definitely appreciate the help in gaining a little visibility.

That’s just about it. I’ve got a book to finish, a short story that’s burning to be written, about a bazillion publishing chores that I’ve put off for far too long, and a whole bunch of other stuff to do. Take care, and until next time, thanks for reading!
