Two new cover reveals!

In between writing and revising, I’ve managed to redo the covers for Desert Stars and Stars of Blood and Glory. Check them out!

SBG (cover)DS (cover)I’m really excited to get the new editions out, especially the print editions! Expect to see those soon, like maybe in a week or two.

If you’ve already bought the books, don’t worry; the stories are still exactly the same. The new editions will just have the new covers and some updated metadata. I’m not sure if Amazon automatically updates them if you’ve already bought them, but if it’s an issue, just shoot me an email and we’ll work it out.

Man, designing covers is fun! 😀 I should do it more often!

How going indie is like driving a manual (plus a cover reveal)

A couple of weeks ago, I got a new (to me) car. It’s a 2005 Ford Focus / Saleen: a two-door hatchback that drives like a racing car and gets about thirty miles per gallon (WA-A-AY better than the gas guzzler I was driving before). It’s also a manual transmission, which is perhaps the biggest difference between this and my previous car.

This is my first time driving stick shift, and I have to say, it is a lot of fun! When you drive a stick, each hand and each foot is doing something different. There’s a lot more to keep track of, and if you do things in the wrong order (like braking without engaging the clutch, or starting without giving it some gas), you run the risk of making the car stall or doing nasty things to your transmission. On the other hand, driving a manual gives you a much better feel for the engine and what it’s capable of. You can feel when you’re putting too much stress on it–or alternately, when you can push it a little further.

I usually like to walk everywhere, but ever since I got this car, I just want to drive it! It’s way more fun than driving an automatic, even with (or indeed, because of) the extra challenge. So today, while I was walking to BYU campus (alas, the parking situation there makes driving a major pain), I got to thinking about it, and I realized that driving a manual is a lot like being an indie author.

When you’re an indie, you have a lot more things to juggle, just like driving a manual. This gives you much greater control of your career, but it also makes it easier to stall or screw up. At the same time, because of that extra control, you’ve got a much better feel for the market, and probably a better connection with your readers. And for me at least, the extra challenge doesn’t make it less enjoyable, it actually makes me enjoy it more!

Nothing Found

This week, I had the first day where I sold 100+ books in a 24 hour period. That was pretty awesome! I’ve been running a $.99 sale for Star Wanderers: The Jeremiah Chronicles (Omnibus I-IV), and it got picked up by a couple of ebook sites that really pushed it in the right way. Now that I know how to run a sale like that, I hope to do it again, perhaps for Black Friday. And if you haven’t picked up this one yet, it’s on sale for $.99 through Friday.

Marketing and promotion is one of the harder parts about going indie for me, kind of like how finding the clutch point and starting without stalling is hard when you first drive a manual. The more that I practice, though, the better that I get at it, and the more I enjoy it.

Another area where I think I’ve more or less stalled is in my covers. When I put out the first few Gaia Nova novels, I spent a fair amount of money hiring out artists to do the illustrations, but I did the typography myself. On those earlier covers, it definitely shows. For my later books, I worked with a bunch of cover designers, and seeing their work made me realize that there’s definitely room for improvement on those earlier ones, especially for the print editions.

I’ve decided to redo the covers for those three novels (Bringing Stella Home, Desert Stars, and Stars of Blood and Glory), keeping the illustrations but changing the typography. I tried to find a cover designer to do it, but I wasn’t able to find one that did satisfactory work, and after playing around with them for a bit I think I can actually do them myself. I’ve got a lot more experience with covers and cover design now than I did when I was starting out, and I’ve learned a few photoshop tricks as well.

In any case, here is what I came up with for Bringing Stella Home:

BSH (cover)How do you like it? I rather like how it turned out, though I’ll admit I’m still learning. I did the new design just this morning, so I figure I ought to wait a couple of days and maybe seek out some feedback from professional designers before I go through with it.

I hope to have the new edition out before the end of the month. The content and story will all be the same, but the cover and metadata will be updated, and some minor errors such as typos will be fixed. I also hope to do the same thing with Desert Stars and Stars of Blood and Glory. Once the new editions are out, I’ll probably run some sales and giveaways with them, so definitely stay tuned!

As for my other projects, the next book in the Sons of the Starfarers series is out with my first readers, so it’s on track for a January release. My next WIP is The Sword Keeper, a fantasy novel I think I’ve mentioned before, and I hope to get that one knocked out in about a month or so. It’s already halfway finished, so the hard part is just ahead. There are also a couple of Gaia Nova novels that I’ve been meaning to get around to, and probably will before the end of the year.

That just about does it. Look out for more covers soon! I’m definitely having fun with the new ones. 😀

Cover reveal for first SONS OF THE STARFARERS omnibus!

Great news! The cover for the first Sons of the Starfarers omnibus is here–check it out!

SSF I-III (cover)Since the omnibus is just the first three books in one collection, I should have it up for pre-order in the next few days. The release date will be November 1st, and I plan to set the ebook price at $5.99.

One of the reasons for the delay is so that I can get the print edition up and launched at the same time as the ebook. I could probably get the typesetting done in less than a week if I dropped everything to work on it, but right now most of my attention is focused on writing Book IV: Friends in Command. If all goes well, that book should launch sometime in December.

Lots and lots of work to do–you guys are definitely keeping me busy! I know that some of you are waiting impatiently for the next book, so I’m working on that as quickly as I reasonably can. Until then, take care and thanks for reading!

Almost back from vacation

So I’m in Massachusetts now, getting ready to head back to Utah by way of my sister’s in Iowa. I spent the last week on Cape Cod for family vacation, which was a lot of fun! Cape Cod is one of my favorite places, and it was good to sit back and take a break from things.

Of course, that doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing. While on the beach, I reread Nancy Kress’s Beginnings, Middles, and Ends (an excellent writing book), and in the evenings I tinkered a little with a short story in the Star Wanderers universe. I also sent out several short story submissions, and even received a couple of rejections. I’ve got seven stories out on submission right now, and I hope to push that number even higher before the end of the summer.

But short stories aren’t the main focus. The main focus right now is Sons of the Starfarers, specifically, getting Strangers in Flight published. The final draft is currently with my editor, and the cover art is ready to go. Check it out!

SSF-III (cover)I am definitely looking forward to getting this book out. But if you haven’t read the other books in the Sons of the Starfarers series yet, I would advise you to wait until the first omnibus comes out. I should have that up for pre-order by the middle of September, and I’ll price it slightly lower than all three books put together.

I’m not sure when the fourth book will be out. At this point, all I have is a rough outline. However, I expect that it will be out before Christmas. I don’t think it will take more than a couple of months to write, and I’m really excited to write the fifth book, so once I get started I expect it will go quickly. The title for book four is Friends in Command, and it will be primarily from Mara’s point of view.

That just about does it for now. I’d better get back to packing so that I can get some sleep before the night is over. Take care!

Cover art for COMRADES IN HOPE!

Hey guys, guess what? The cover art for Comrades in Hope (Sons of the Starfarers: Book II) is finished! Here it is:

SSF-II (cover)Pretty sweet, eh? Kalen O’Donnell did this one as well. I just got the final draft back from my editor, so with luck the ebook version should be out this weekend.

I’m definitely excited to publish this book! It was a blast to write and I think you guys are really going to enjoy it. It follows Aaron Deltana as he joins the Outworld Resistance as a drop-ship pilot, boarding and capturing enemy capital ships with a platoon of rebel guerrillas. There’s a bunch of new characters in there too, including an old family friend, and the mystery girl from the first book plays into things as well. Where the first book was more about setting up the characters and the world-building, though, this one dives right into the action, with lots of space battles and desperate firefights. The war for the Outworlds is on!

If you’d like to be notified when this book comes out, feel free to sign up for my email newsletter if you haven’t already. I only send out emails when I have a new book out, so you don’t have to worry about spam or anything like that (unless you think I have new releases too often, lol!). Or you can just keep watching this blog. I’ll be sure to post the links on the sidebar, and I’ll probably do a post about it too.

That’s just about all for now. I’m finishing up the first draft of Strangers in Flight (Sons of the Starfarers: Book III) in the next day or two, so after that I’ll dive into publishing mode and put out Comrades in Hope as soon as I can. Be sure to look out for it!

Cover reveal for BROTHERS IN EXILE!

I just got the cover art for Brothers in Exile (Sons of the Starfarers, Book 1) and it looks pretty sweet–check it out!

SSF-I (cover)The cover designer is Kalen O’Donnell–he’s going to be doing the covers for the rest of the series. The scene here is from the first chapter, where Isaac and Aaron arrive at the derelict station in the Nova Alnilam system.

The book is coming along quite well–I should be ready to publish it before the end of the week! Just have to go through the edits, make a couple of small changes, and format it for publication (but that part doesn’t take too long). With luck, it should be up in time for Memorial Day.

I’m going to try something a little different with this book and launch it at $.99 for the first week, then raise the price up to $2.99 afterwards. That way, I can give my fans a good deal, and hopefully move it up on some of the lists to gain some visibility. That means it will only be available on Amazon, Smashwords, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble for the first week, though, since it’s harder to make price changes on the other sites, and Amazon will send you a nasty take-down notice if the book is selling for less on any other site.

That’s just about it. Back to work now–I’ve got a book to publish!

New STAR WANDERERS covers!

Let’s take a quick break from the Brothers in Exile excerpts to show you the awesome new cover art for the Star Wanderers books! These ones are for Dreamweaver, Benefactor, Reproach, and Deliverance, and I think they turned out quite well.

SW-V (cover)SW-VI (cover)SW-VII (cover)SW-VIII (cover)

The cover designer here is Libbie Hawker, who also did the other covers (except for Outworlder and Tales of the Far Outworlds. She’s also got a lot of great books of her own, so be sure to check her out!

In just a few days, I should have some art for Brothers in Exile to show you guys. I think you’re going to like it!

New STAR WANDERERS cover art!

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I was getting some new cover art for the Star Wanderers books. Well, the art for the first half of the series is in–check it out!

SW-II (cover)SW-III (cover)SW-IV (cover)SW I-IV (cover)

A big thanks to Libbie Hawker, who did the cover art. I’m really pleased with how they’ve come out so far. We’ve been working on the proofs for the next four books, and they’re going to be really awesome as well!

I’ll reformat the ebooks and upload them to Amazon and the other retailers tomorrow. It’s probably going to take all day, but they should be up soon.

In other news, I finished the first draft of Comrades in Hope! The final word count clocked in at a little over 41,000, pushing it from novella-length into short novel territory. I’m fairly pleased with how it turned out, though it probably needs some work before it’s ready to go out. If all goes well, I’ll be publishing it before the end of June–a tight schedule, to be sure, but not an impossible one to keep. I’m totally immersed in the Sons of the Starfarers series right now, so it’s going to be really awesome when the first three books launch!

That’s just about it. A big thanks to everyone who picked up a copy of Star Wanderers: Outworlder on Amazon today! The book hit #203 in the Free Kindle Store, due in large part to an ad on Kindle Books and Tips. Needless to say, I am really shocked.

Take care, and thanks for reading!

STAR WANDERERS Omnibus 2 cover reveal!

Hey guys! Guess what? I’ve got a new book coming out! This one is a new Star Wanderers omnibus, and includes Dreamweaver, Benefactor, Reproach, and Deliverance. Derek Murphy of Creativindie Covers did the cover design for this one, and this is what we came up with:
SW V-VIII (cover)Star Wanderers: Tales of the Far Outworlds will be out in ebook format in a couple of days–basically, as soon as I can format and upload it. The only content in this one is the Author’s Note, which I’ll post soon to my blog, so if you’ve already got parts V-VIII, there’s no need to buy this one (unless you’d like to have them all consolidated into one ebook).

I’m not sure when the print version will come out, but I’ll definitely mention it here and in my email newsletter when it does. In the meantime, keep an eye out for the ebook version, because it’s coming out very soon!
