Where the Idea Came From

Brothers in Exile grew out of my thoughts on frontier stories about rugged individualism and personal freedom. On the edge of civilization, mobility means safety: you can leave, disengage, and avoid entanglements. I wanted to explore what happens when characters reject that logic—not because they’re naïve, but because compassion demands commitment. What if, in a frontier science fiction setting, compassion isn’t a momentary kindness, but a decision that permanently ties you to others—and to a future you can no longer walk away from?

How the Cost of Compassion Shapes the Story

In Brothers in Exile, Isaac and Aaron begin as independent starfarers with no fixed home, no political allegiance, and no long-term obligations beyond each other. Compassion changes that. When they choose to help a young woman frozen in cryosleep—someone they were never meant to be responsible for—they are no longer merely passing through the Outworlds. They become involved—personally, morally, and historically.

The cost of compassion in this story is not framed as regret or doubt; the brothers never question whether they did the right thing. Instead, the cost appears as entanglement: new enemies, new loyalties, new dangers, and the slow erosion of the freedom they once prized. Isaac feels this as the weight of responsibility—each compassionate choice narrowing his room to maneuver. Aaron experiences it as clarity: once you recognize another person’s humanity, walking away is no longer an option.

This tension—between freedom and obligation, independence and belonging—drives the conflict of the book and sets the trajectory for everything that follows.

What the Cost of Compassion Says About Us

We often want to think about compassion as something offered freely, but real compassion creates bonds—and bonds create responsibility. Brothers in Exile reflects the idea that freedom is comfortable precisely because it avoids commitment. True compassion ends that comfort. It ties us to people, to places, and to futures we did not plan. The story suggests that while this cost is real and often painful, it is also the price of meaning. Why This Theme Matters to Me

This theme matters to me because I don’t believe that moral choices exist in isolation. Compassion changes who we are and what we’re responsible for next. In Brothers in Exile, Isaac and Aaron don’t lose their freedom because they make a mistake—they lose it because they choose to care. That choice doesn’t make their lives easier, but it gives them direction, purpose, and a place in a larger story. That, to me, is what makes the cost of compassion worthwhile—and why this story belongs at the beginning of the Sons of the Starfarers series.

Planning out the next year of writing

I’ve made some major changes to my writing process recently, mostly having to do with the accountability systems that measure my writing productivity. Instead of tracking daily word count, which I’ve done consistently for the better part of the last decade, I now track my average daily words per hour across all writing sessions.

What I found by tracking word count was that my writing and my family life were consistently coming into conflict, which wasn’t good for either. With three small children and a wife who no longer works from home, I’m currently in a season of life where I simply cannot dedicate as much time to writing.

So instead, I’m striving to do just enough writing each day to keep my writing skills sharp, so that when I do get the opportunity to dedicate a whole day or a whole weekend to writing, I can make the most of it. So instead of measuring the quantity of writing I do each day, I’m measuring how efficiently I can use my writing time, and striving to maximize that.

Over the holiday break, I also did quite a bit of thinking over all my current writing projects and how I should prioritize them in the coming year. Basically, for each WIP, I asked myself two questions: “how would I feel if this was the only book I wrote in 2026?” and “how would I feel if I never made any progress on this book for the rest of the year?” Based on that, I put my current novel WIPs in the following order:

  1. Captive of the Falconstar
  2. The Soulbond and the Sling
  3. The Unknown Sea
  4. Lord of the Falconstar

More than any other book I really want to finish Captive of the Falconstar this year. It’s science fiction, not fantasy, but it’s part of an unfinished trilogy that I’ve been committed to finishing for quite some time now. Even though I want to pivot to writing fantasy, I don’t want to leave a bunch of unfinished series as I do that. Also, it’s a really good book that I think that readers of the first book, Queen of the Falconstar, will find immensely satisfying. So I really want to finish and publish this book this year.

I don’t know exactly how long it will take me to finish it. Hopefully sometime around the spring, at which point I’ll put it up for a 2-3 month preorder. But I’m pretty overwhelmed with my other obligations right now, especially family, and we haven’t yet gotten into a good routine with my wife’s new job. So it might take a lot longer than that. But I am consistently working on it a little each day, and I expect it will be finished and published by the end of the year.

But even though I want to make progress on this series, I actually don’t want to lay everything aside to finish it. Which is why the next two books, in order of priority, are both fantasy. The Soulbond and the Sling is one that I really want to finish writing this year, even if I don’t end up publishing it in 2026. As I’ve said in previous posts, I don’t want to launch this new epic fantasy series until I have the first three books finished and ready to rapid release.

But I already have a complete human-revised AI draft of this book, so all I have to do now is go through and rewrite it in my own words. That’s going to take some time, simply because it’s such a massive book, but I want to get it done and finished and ready to publish, even if I end up holding off on that for the next couple of years.

Of course, while I continue to work on The Soulbond and the Sling, I will also continue to work on book 2, The Soulbond and the Lady. The rough AI draft of that book is already complete, but the final AI draft is going to take a lot of work, so it will probably take me as long to finish that as it takes to write and revise the final human draft of book 1. So I probably won’t finish The Soulbond and the Lady this year.

If I can finish a third book, I would like it to be The Unknown Sea. This would be the fifth installment in the Sea Mage Cycle, and so far, it’s been one of the funnest books to write. If you’ve enjoyed the other books in the series, I think you’re really going to enjoy this one, and I would really love to get it out there for everyone to read. Like all of the Sea Mage books, this one is relatively short, so finishing it shouldn’t be too difficult. It’s just a matter of making the time.

One thing you may notice is that I haven’t included any of the Christopher Columbus books in this lineup. After giving it some serious thought, I’ve decided to put that series on hold for the forseeable future. I just think it’s more important to pivot to pivot to writing fantasy, which means finishing all of the unfinished science fiction trilogies and writing new fantasy books to release in the coming years. 

So that’s my writing plan for 2026. I may also start a new WIP at some point, just because I can’t help myself—in fact, I rather expect it. But if and when I do, I’ll probably take it no farther than the rough AI draft before putting it on the back burner. In fact, it might be a good idea to put several such projects together, outlining and prewriting them just enough that I can pick them up and run with them when I’m ready to commit to such a project. That should scratch my creative itch just enough without taking too much time from the WIPs I’m committed to finishing.

There Is No “AI Bubble”

In my various and sundry travels over this desolate wilderness we call the internet, I’ve recently heard a lot of people talk about this thing they’re calling the “AI bubble.” The basic theory is that all of this AI development is being artificially propped up, that it isn’t nearly as profitable or as transformative as the AI proponents claim. When the music stops and the curtain gets pulled back, all of these AI companies will collapse, and all of this AI that nobody asked for will get scaled back to something normal. Or something like that.

But here’s the thing… the fact that so many people are talking about the “AI bubble,” to the point that it’s now a talking point, is pretty strong evidence that it’s not actually a bubble. When a true economic bubble happens, nobody calls it a “bubble” because everyone is so euphoric about it. Indeed, it’s that very euphoria that fuels the bubble. Housing prices only go up, donchaknow. AOL and Pets.com is totally the way of the future. So shut up and mortgage your house so you can buy the latest tulip.

With AI, though, it seems that all of the most vocal people are anti-AI and want it all to go away. Indeed, the main driver of all this “AI bubble” talk seems to be fear that AI will drive large numbers of people out of work. So what’s actually happening?

I do think there is a bubble in our economy, but I don’t think it’s being driven by AI. Rather, I think what we have is a debt bubble, which is very close to unwinding in a catastrophic way. The only way to stop that from happening is to grow the economy faster than the debt bubble is inflating, but at this point, the only way to do that is through some hugely transformative new technology, such as generative AI.

So all of the forces that want to keep propping up this debt bubble have turned to AI as the salvation of our economy, pumping billions and billions of dollars into it in the hopes that it will yield the sort of economic growth that will allow them to keep growing the debt. But for ordinary people, it’s a lose-lose scenario, since if AI succeeds, lots of us will be out of work… but if AI fails, the economy collapses and lots of us will also be out of work. Hence why so many ordinary people see AI itself as the problem.

Here’s what I think is ultimately going to happen: AI will prove to be super transformative in the long run, just like the internet, but it won’t save us from the debt bubble the way that our business and political elites so desperately hope that it will. The debt bubble is going to pop, and we are going to have to face up to the consequences of decades of very bad fiscal and monetary policy, with or without AI. But after the dust settles, AI will play a major role in the rebuilding of the economy, for good or for ill.

I wrote Brothers in Exile because I wanted a space adventure where the relationship mattered as much as the action. In my author’s note, I talk about how the brother dynamic in the film Gettysburg (and the real emotional weight behind it) helped shape the characters Isaac and Aaron—the older brother trying to be the responsible one, and the reckless younger brother who pushes back against the authority figures in his life. If you enjoy stories where family is both the complication and the strength—where two people face the void together and refuse to stop caring—I think you’re going to enjoy this book.

Did I predict it?

On July 24th, 2024, eleven days after the Butler Pennsylvania assassination attempt on President Trump’s life, I posted the following prediction:

9. In the first year of Trump’s second term in office, at least one of the following three things will happen: A second global pandemic,

Nope.

A domestic terrorist attack on the scale of 9/11, or

No, thank goodness.

A major banking collapse and/or sovereign debt crisis that destroys the global economy.

No, though not for lack of trying. Seriously, I think this was one of the biggest unspoken goals of the Schumer shutdown earlier this year: to crash Trump’s economy in a way that benefits Democrats in the 2026 midterms. Thankfully, it seems to have failed.

So it looks like this prediction was a swing and a miss—though it could just be that the timing is off. After all, the day after the 2020 elections, I predicted in my personal journal that we were about to experience a rash of major political assassinations, but that didn’t start to play out until after the 2024 elections. The hardest part about making predictions is the timing, so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if one (or all) of these things happen by the end of 2028.
