Trope Tuesday: The Last DJ

armstrongIn any vast bureaucracy, you’re bound to find obstructive bureaucrats and professional butt-kissers.  But if you look long and hard enough, usually somewhere towards the bottom, you may be lucky enough to find one of the Last DJs.

The Last DJ is a man with integrity, who often puts honor before reason and cannot be bought, no matter how much his superiors try.  Consequently, he usually ends up somewhere at the bottom of the organizational hierarchy, no matter how competent he may be.  In extreme cases, he may be reassigned to Antarctica.  Either way, do not expect to see him kicked upstairs–that’s for insufferably incompetent idiots who are promoted to an administrative post so everyone else can get back to the real work.  If anything, expect this guy to get thrown under the bus.

Depending on the story, he may be a brotherly mentor figure for the main character or play some other sort of supporting role.  However, don’t expect him to be much of a plot driver, unless the story is specifically about him.  Because of his refusal to suck up or play office politics, he’s rarely in a position to effect change or become a whistle-blower.

Over time, this character may turn into something of a sour knight, developing a thick skin of crusty cynicism to protect his idealistic heart from all the crap he continually has to put up with.  Like the Obi-wan, if he’s a mentor figure, he will probably die.  If he’s the hero, though, or part of the ragtag bunch of misfits, expect him to be vindicated, possibly in a crowning moment of awesome.  Rarely if ever will this guy be the villain–that’s the obstructive bureaucrat, whom this guy hates.

Lieutenant Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist is a good example of this trope.  He’s a good soldier who was passed up on all the promotions because he refused to go along with the war crimes done against the Ishvalan people.  His sister, who WAS reassigned to Antarctica (though probably by choice), is a whole other story.

Another good example of this trope is Lucius Fox from Batman Begins.  The interesting thing about this one is that he’s a mentor figure who actually survives.  This is probably because the story requires a lot of badassery from the hero, and Lucius is in no position to fill that role, so there’s no threat of him outshining Bruce Wayne.  This is also a good example of the last DJ getting vindicated in the end.

In my own work, the best example I can think of is Tiera from Desert Stars.  She’s fiercely stubborn with an uncompromising sense of honor, which results in her being stripped of her claim of inheritance due to her stepmother Shira’s wiles (although ‘stepmother’ isn’t quite the right word–how do you describe your father’s evil second wife, when he’s still married to your mother?).  I’ve got some interesting plans for a sequel where she’s the main character, but that book is still in the early conceptual stages.

In my own life, I’ve actually fulfilled this trope.  I don’t care to discuss the details of it publicly, but back when I was interning in Washington DC, I had a very negative experience that this trope describes perfectly.  It’s one of the reasons I hate Washington so much, and decided to become a global nomad who makes a difference on the ground, rather than pushing papers in someone else’s petty empire of personal influence.  It’s also one of the reasons why I started the Star Wanderers series–because I wanted to tell a story about people on the space-bound frontier, as far away from the galactic empire as possible.

I may not write many stories about vast bureaucracies or other hierarchical organizations, just because that doesn’t interest me, but whenever I do, you’ll probably see this guy pop up.  As someone who’s been there, I have a lot of sympathy for this character.  You’ll probably see him (or her) pop up in my work from time to time.

Job – reliable internet = spotty posting

Sorry for the general lack of posts these past few days.  I haven’t fallen off the face of the Earth (yet), I’m just working full time and living in a place that doesn’t have reliable internet.  Someone in the complex tried to set up a wireless router, and now the internet is down.  For some reason, the broadweave guys haven’t fixed it yet.

Anyways, here’s what’s going on in my life.  I found a temporary full-time job working in a warehouse.  They let me listen to my headphones while I work, so I’ve been catching up on a lot of podcasts and old recordings from cons and English 318.  It’s actually kind of awesome.  Definitely better than the call center.

I’m in the midst of finishing the research for the “class that wouldn’t die” article.  Basically, I have about half a dozen more interviews to do, then write up the rough draft.  I’m having lots of fun meeting all these awesome people and putting this article together.

But between work and the article, I’m finding it much harder to keep up with my writing.  I’m still producing about 2k consistently, but that’s not quite enough to have Mercenary Savior finished by World Fantasy.  Looks like I’ll have to sprint on the weekends.

I’m not too worried about it at this point, though.  The revision is going great–in fact, I might post a few excerpts.  I know the story’s solid, and the characters are a joy–especially Tamu, the slutty, self-centered concubine that becomes something of a mentor for Stella (to her horror, of course).

The Hameji are also quite interesting; one of my goals in this revision is to portray the rationale for their behavior as clearly as I possibly can.  Towards that end, I have a list of points about their culture that I want to get across in the narrative, and I’m keeping track of which scenes convey which points.  The goal is to have at least three scenes for each point, which will involve some substantial revision.  But if it works, the Hameji will go from horrific, brutal antagonists in the beginning to sympathetic if still brutal by the end–kind of like George R. R. Martin’s stuff.

Speaking of George R. R. Martin, I’m reading A GAME OF THRONES right now and I’m absolutely loving it!  I wish I had the time to sit down and read this book for hours.  Alas, the only way I can do that is to give up writing, and I can’t do that.  Weekends, though–better wait for the weekend.

Anyway, that’s what’s going on.  I’d better go to bed now, before I jinx myself tomorrow morning.  Or maybe I already have?  Blarg.  Night.

New directions

This past week, I’ve been going through Bringing Stella Home at quite a good clip.  I’m going through the rough draft as I had it at the end of April, making some major revisions that hopefully are going to make it easier to write the middle section.  

I’ve been going along at a good clip, getting through as many as seven thousand words a day (it helps that I’m not taking classes or working right now), but today I hit something of a wall and realized I couldn’t go forward if I didn’t have some serious  backstory worked out.  So, instead of writing much in the book itself, I went through each of the characters in this mercenary unit and wrote out ALL of their backstories.

It was fun, and took a lot more time than I was expecting.  It also surprised me how much it fleshed them out, made them all real people.  I could go through and write a prequel to this novel now, where the viewpoint alternates between all of these characters and tells how they got together and formed the unit that they are now.  I won’t do that, since it would take too much time, but now I can do it, and that’s going to help out a ton in figuring out what has to happen next.

For this project, one of my goals is to experiment with the three act structure and see if I can strengthen my writing by strictly following that story format.  Well…when I say strictly, I don’t mean that I’ll make the characters do stupid things just to move the plot where it needs to go.  At least, I’m going to try not to end up doing that–we’ll see how it ends up.  The first draft is probably going to be horrendous.

Speaking of horrendous, I’ve been surprisingly discouraged with this story in the past few days.  I mean, it’s probably just me, but it seems that this novel is really just a piece of crap.  Of course, it’s a rough draft, so it’s supposed to be crap, but it’s just frustrating.  Then again, my writing group in English 318 seemed to be really into this story–sometimes, it seemed that they struggled to find things to critique about it–but I wonder if a lot of the positive stuff they said wasn’t just because they were being nice.

Meh.  It doesn’t matter.  Of course this draft is going to need a lot of work–it’s a rough draft, for crying out loud.  If I didn’t think it needed some serious work, something would be wrong with me.

The cool thing is that part I ends at about the 30k mark–right smack at 25%, assuming this novel ends up being about 120k.  That’s exactly where it should be, according to the three act structure.  Encouraging!

I mapped things out on my calendar, and I’ve figured that if I do 3,00 words a day, I can finish this draft by the 15th of June.  3,000 words a day shouldn’t be too hard to manage–I’ve got another 40k of stuff from the previous unfinished draft, and while much of that needs some deep revisions, I can probably recycle at least two thirds of it without making too many changes.  I’ve got a couple of conventions coming up here–CONduit and BYU Writers for Young Readers–but I think I can still make things average out quite nicely.

15th of June.  It’s a good target.  It also gives me practically the entire summer to revise and re-revise my other novels, perhaps even start a completely new project.  Huzzah!
