Brothers in Exile — excerpt 3

On the dark side of the horizon, where the ocean of stars met the blackness of night, a tiny point of light gradually grew brighter than all the others. It was the station, reflecting the starlight. As they came closer, the man-made structure gradually took shape: two narrow wheels running at cross-purposes to each other around a fat central cylinder with long antennae on either end. Isaac gripped the flight stick a little tighter and rechecked the nav-computer to make sure that they were still on course. Down below, a flash of pale blue lightning lit up a tiny patch of the planet’s atmosphere, but only for an instant. Whatever tempest swirled in the clouds below them, it preferred to brood in the shadows.

“We’re coming up on the station,” said Aaron. “One klick and dropping.”

“Can you try to contact them as I make the final approach? Be sure to try the shortwave too—if anyone’s still alive in there, chances are better that they’ll have something rigged up on those bands.”

Aaron shrugged, but he went ahead and did it anyway. Isaac kept an eye on the main screen as he made the final maneuvers to put them in a parallel orbit just 500 meters away.

“So this is Alnilam station,” he mused as he peered out the forward window. The station’s hull was a dark gray, the beacons at the ends of the antennae a deep flashing red. The starlight was too dim to give anything more than the basic shape of the structure. On the inside of the wheels where the windows should have been, there was a blackness as dark as the night on the planet below.

Brothers in Exile — excerpt 2

“There,” said Aaron. “Got it.” The main cockpit holoscreen lit up between them, showing an image of the planet with their current trajectory in green. Around the sphere representing the planet itself, a red ellipse traced a separate orbit.

“What’s that?” Isaac asked.

“The station. Since they aren’t responding to our hails, I figure we ought to calculate our own approach vector.”

Isaac frowned. “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. We don’t know what else is down there. For all we know, our approach could put us on a collision course with local traffic.”

“What traffic? We’re picking up nothing but radio silence across all bands—for all we know, the station is dead.”

Dead. The suggestion sent chills down the back of Isaac’s neck. He sighed and shook his head.

“If the station were dead, wouldn’t the colonists have set up some sort of distress beacon?”

“What’s the point in setting up a distress beacon if you’re more than two parsecs from the nearest help?”

What if they are dead? Isaac wondered. What if that’s why they haven’t hailed us?

“Something is definitely wrong,” he said softly. “Maybe we should just cut our losses now and leave.”

“What? You mean turn around and go back to Nova Minitak?”

“That, or move on to Esperanzia. This isn’t right—we’ve been transmitting on every major frequency, with no response. Something about this system is very wrong, and I don’t want to get involved.”

“Involved in what?” asked Aaron, his face incredulous. “If something is wrong, maybe they need our help. How can we turn around and leave them if they need us?”

We can’t help them if they’re already dead.

Excerpt 1

Brothers in Exile — excerpt 1

Something about the Nova Alnilam system felt wrong. Perhaps it was the silence that greeted Isaac and his brother as they exited jumpsace near the fifth planet. The deep blue ice giant world shone pale in the crystalline light of its sun, while all their commscans picked up nothing but empty static. For a planet that was supposed to have a mid-sized orbital colony of more than a thousand people, that was highly unusual.

“Alnilam Station,” he said, transmitting across all the major radio bands. “This is Isaac of the Medea, requesting docking permission. Do you copy?”

Silence. Isaac counted to five and glanced at his younger brother Aaron.

“I don’t think they’re picking us up,” he said. “How’s our orbital trajectory?”

“It’s coming, it’s coming,” said Aaron, his eyes practically fused to his display screen. “Just give me a second.” He brushed his unkempt brown hair out of the way and scratched at the patchy stubble on his chin.

Isaac sat back in his chair and mentally reviewed what they knew about the system. A class F star on the barely inhabited Outworld fringes of the south second quadrant, it lay almost six light-years from the nearest established settlement. The first colonists had arrived about a hundred and twenty standard years ago, but all the records since then were spotty and inconsistent. An obscure astrographical survey in the Gaian Imperial catalog showed that the system was rich in uranium and other radioactives, which if true would make it the perfect third leg in a trade route of the local stars. Few starfarers ever came out this way, though—for all Isaac knew, they were the first people to visit this colony in a generation.

SW: TALES OF THE FAR OUTWORLDS is now out!

SW V-VIII (thumb)Well, it’s been a few days since I uploaded Star Wanderers: Tales of the Far Outworlds (Omnibus V-VIII) to the various retail sites, and I’m happy to report that it’s up on just about all of them! You can now purchase it for $3.99 on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Smashwords, and Kobo. In just a week or two, it should be up on iTunes as well.

This omnibus edition gathers Parts V through VIII all under one cover, with an author’s note that I’ll post here as well. So if you’ve bought or downloaded the individual parts already, there isn’t much of a point to pick up this one unless the omnibus keeps your library uncluttered. But if you have already read them, I would appreciate any honest reviews.

If you’re on Goodreads and want to add the book to your library, you can do so here. I need to get better about posting my reviews and to-read list to Goodreads, because it also helps to boost visibility. I’ve noticed my overall Goodreads author rating creeping slowly up, so apparently more and more of you are enjoying the Star Wanderers books. Thanks!

This omnibus ties up the main series, but I’m thinking very seriously about bringing the characters back for a full-length novel. It’s still in the pre-writing stages, of course, but I’d probably set it 15-20 years after the events of Tales of the Outworlds and bring back all the major characters, as well as their children. I even have a titled planned for it: Children of the Starry Sea.

This is actually a project I’ve had on my mind for a while–I first blogged about it here–but I’m thinking a lot more seriously about it, and will probably bump it up on my writing to-do list. It would certainly be fun to bring all the old characters back for another adventure. And I have the beginnings of a plot, too. I can’t say much about it, but it would probably revolve around Salazar, the exiled pirates, and a couple of things from Sons of the Starfarers.

So yeah, even though Tales of the Far Outworlds represents a closing point for now, it probably won’t be the end of the whole series. But I have no idea when anything else will come out, or even if Children of the Starry Sea will be the next book. I could quite possibly write a couple more novellas.

tl;dr, I have no idea what I’m going to write until I actually write it, but there’s probably going to be a full-length novel after this one. So keep an eye out, either here or through my email newsletter. I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

STAR WANDERERS: DELIVERANCE (PART VIII) is now available!

SW-VIII (thumb)Well, guys, it looks like I’ve gone and published another book! Star Wanderer: Deliverance (Part VIII) is now live on Amazon, Smashwords, and Kobo, and will soon be up on Barnes & Noble, Sony, and the iBookstore.  In the next couple of months, I’ll probably put it up on Google Play and DriveThru Fiction as well.

This is the eighth Star Wanderers book, and more or less brings the series to a close.  That doesn’t mean that I’m finished with this universe or these characters, though.  I plan to bring a lot of them back with Sons of the Starfarers, a spinoff series that will follow Mariya’s brothers, Isaac and Aaron, as they fight to keep the Outworlds free from Gaian Imperial domination.  That series will also tie everything in with the Gaia Nova novels, and show the origins of the Hameji.  So be sure to look out for those!

Also, I’m happy to report that the print editions of Outworlder (Part I), Fidelity (Part II), Sacrifice (Part III), and Homeworld (Part IV) are now available on Amazon!  Each costs about $5, and is between 75 to 100 pages.  The print versions for Dreamweaver (Part V), Benefactor (Part VI), Reproach (VII), and Deliverance (Part VIII) will hopefully be out before the end of the month!

A note about the print editions: I’m currently using the same covers as the ebooks, with the generic NASA space art.  However, I recently made an agreement with Derek Murphy of CreativIndie Covers to redo the book covers for the entire series.  This includes the print versions, so once I have the new covers, I will replace them and the old versions will be unavailable.

If you want the best looking print book, it’s probably best to wait.  Derek did a really awesome job on Part I: Outworlder, and I expect that the rest of the covers will be just as stunning.  However, since there’s only going to be a limited number of the original versions, there is a chance that they might become more valuable if these books really take off.  I can’t make any promises about that, since I really have no idea, but if you would like to get the original versions, they will only be up for a couple of months as I gradually replace them.  I will have matching versions for each book in the series, though, so if you want to collect a complete set with the original cover art, you’ll definitely be able to do that.

That just about does it.  As always, thanks for reading!

STAR WANDERERS: HOMEWORLD is now available on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Smashwords!

That’s right!  Part IV of the Star Wanderers series is available for $2.99 on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Smashwords.  You can also find it listed on Goodreads here.  Newsletter subscribers should get the Smashwords coupon code in an hour or two.

From the book description:

THEY’VE FINALLY FOUND A WORLD TO CALL HOME—BUT FIRST, THEY HAVE TO FIGHT FOR IT.

For years, Jeremiah has wandered the stars in search of a home. With his wife Noemi about to have a baby, he thinks he’s finally found a place to settle down. The Zarmina system lies on the edge of the Outworld frontier, but together with their friends, they hope to establish a thriving new colony. The only problem is that the system is already inhabited—by pirates.

The colonists no sooner arrive than they fall prisoner to Captain Helena and her band of rogues from the New Pleiades. She gives them an ultimatum: live like slaves on the planet’s surface, or breathe vacuum. With all their dreams about to be shattered, they have to find a way to fight back. But to do so may endanger everything—including the lives of the ones they love most.

This one was a lot of fun to write.  Everything from all the previous parts came together wonderfully, and the ending just blew me away.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

This novella concludes the main series arc for Star Wanderers, but I still have a lot of stories that I want to tell in this universe.  I plan to write a few stand-alone novelettes and novellas from the other characters’ points of view, perhaps expanding the series to include another arc.  Part V, Dreamweaver, is already written, and if all goes well, I should write Part VI (Wanderlust) over the next couple of weeks.

That’s just about all for now.  Thanks so much to everyone who has liked, shared, or reviewed the other Star Wanderers stories!  I think you’re going to like this one.  Enjoy!

Star Wanderers: Part II is now published!

The next installment of Star Wanderers is now up on Amazon, Smashwords, and Xinxii!  In a couple of weeks, it should be up on Kobo, iTunes, and Barnes & Noble as well.

This continues the story of Jeremiah and Noemi, a boy and a girl from completely different worlds who end up married by accident after a deadly famine drives her away from her home.  Neither of them speak the same language, but they eventually come to an understanding of each other and figure out how to make things work.

In Part II, though, all that is put to the test.

It’s available right now for $2.99, but if you sign up for my email newsletter in the sidebar, I’ll send out a Smashwords coupon code at the end of the week that you can use to download it for free.  Part I is already free on Smashwords, and should be free soon on the other sites as well.

Part III needs a lot of work, but I should be sending the rough version out to my first readers pretty soon.  Once I’ve gotten their feedback, it shouldn’t take more than a few weeks to get it finalized and ready for publishing.  After that, it’s just a matter of finding proofreaders and formatting it, which doesn’t take long at all.

That’s about all for now.  I hope you enjoy it–and if you do, please share!
