What This Book Is About
Patriots in Retreat is a fast-moving military space opera about a war turning against the Outworld Confederacy just when its defenders can least afford another defeat. After the Gaian Empire gains access to jump beacon technology, the balance of the war shifts overnight, allowing Imperial fleets to strike deep behind Confederate lines. Captain Mara Soladze of the Merope-7 finds herself caught in the chaos, forced to lead her damaged crew through routs, retreats, bureaucratic failures, and desperate tactical gambles as the Outworlds face the possible collapse of everything they have fought to build.
The novel also follows Ayesha Bint Hasan Al-Hasani, a cybernetically enhanced Imperial intelligence agent assigned to use the captured Outworld pilot Samson as both guide and pawn. Their tense, dangerous partnership becomes a battle of loyalty, desire, coercion, and identity, especially as Ayesha begins to see that the Empire’s definition of freedom is built on domination. Through Mara’s burden of command and Ayesha’s struggle with allegiance, the story explores what patriotism means when governments fail, what freedom costs when defeat seems inevitable, and how individual choices can still matter in the middle of a collapsing war.
This is a story for readers who enjoy fleet battles, desperate retreats, morally complicated defectors, frontier politics, outlaw starfarers, and character-driven military science fiction where survival is never guaranteed. As the sixth book in Sons of the Starfarers, Patriots in Retreat deepens the series’ central conflict between Imperial power and Outworld independence while setting the stage for the next phase of the war.
