The YouTube algorithm recommended this to me, and I found it interesting. Made me want to try my hand at some portal fantasy, or perhaps some progression fantasy. (But I don’t think I could write straight-up litRPG. I’m just not enough of a gamer.)

There are many sub-genres in the LitRPG genre, including GameLit which doesn’t require a full-blown RPG set of rules. Isekai (portal), cultivation (wuxia/xanxia), progression, dungeon core, apocalypse, and regression are some of the more popular. To me, one of the more important things is a consistent world, whatever the rules. If you want a taste of the different sub-genres, the following series are all great, although different. Cradle (Will Wight), Beware of Chicken (CasualFarmer), Emerilla (Michal Chatfield), The Completionist Chronicles (Dakota Krout), The World (Jason Cheek), Awaken Online (Travis Bagwell), The System Apocalypse (Tao Wong), Dungeon Crawler Carl (Matt Dinniman), The Primal Hunter (Zogarth). So many more but these will get you started 🙂
Thanks for the recommendations. I think the main reason I haven’t gotten into litRPG is because I haven’t found an entry point that appeals to me. I may try Dungeon Crawler Carl, just because it’s blown up so big, but I was kind of meh on the premise (aliens kidnap the MC and put him in a gladatorial dungeon crawling game with other aliens to decide whether or not to destroy Earth–correct me if I’m wrong) But I’ll check out some of those other ones.
