\u201cDeltana? Is that you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The nearest members of the platoon were looking at her, so she stood up and took her call to the corner. Besides, some of the equipment was fairly noisy. By covering one ear, though, she was able to hear him just fine.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Mara, it is me,\u201d said Aaron, speaking in Gaian. \u201cI have some news!\u201d<\/p>\n

Whatever it was, he sounded excited.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d Mara asked, switching to Gaian for the benefit of the rest of the platoon.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey gave me a commission, just like you said! I\u2019m going to command a small frigate, one of the new ones built by the Tajjis!\u201d<\/p>\n

His Gaian was surprisingly good\u2014he must have been practicing. Mara smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s great, Aaron. I didn\u2019t doubt you for a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI have other news for Fourth Platoon, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her smile instantly fell as she steeled herself for the inevitable.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, yeah? What\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHigh Command is dissolving Paladin<\/em> wing. All of the platoons, including Fourth Platoon, are going to be disbanded.\u201d<\/p>\n

So it\u2019s happening,<\/em> Mara thought to herself. Her gut clenched, but she refused to let the news affect her. After all, she\u2019d known it was coming.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for the heads-up, Aaron. I appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not all, Mara. I have some very good news for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. When Major Achilles gave me the frigate commission, he asked me to name my officers and crew. It\u2019s a small ship, so there\u2019s only room for twenty-five of us, but guess who I named as my first officer?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mara\u2019s heart skipped a beat. \u201cNo way. Don\u2019t tell me you\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Mara. I want you to be my second-in-command.\u201d<\/p>\n

The shock of the news made her blink and go rigid. It took her brain a moment to process the information. At first, she almost panicked, but then she realized that it was a good surprise rather than a bad one.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2014you want me as your XO?\u201d<\/p>\n
