\u201cIs there anything you have to say for yourself, Ensign?\u201d<\/p>\n

Aaron took a deep breath. \u201cUh, no, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

The major raised an eyebrow. \u201cNothing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, uh, just that I did my best, sir.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour best?\u201d said Major Achilles, his eyes growing wide in a terrifying grimace. \u201cYou broke orders, mangled your ship beyond repair, and missed your target objective by almost an entire kilometer! How is that your best?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I got them in alive,\u201d Aaron all but whimpered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was that, Ensign?\u201d<\/p>\n

Aaron hesitated, but the weight of Achilles\u2019s glare forced him to continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI got them in alive, sir. My platoon, I mean. I got them in.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what of your drop-ship?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShips can be replaced, sir. People cannot.\u201d<\/p>\n

He regretted the words almost the moment they left his mouth. How stupid was he to talk back to a major? He was going to get skinned for sure.<\/p>\n

To his surprise, though, Major Achilles only nodded. \u201cIndeed, Ensign. Ships are very replaceable.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned his back on Aaron to pace for a couple of steps. Aaron\u2019s heart raced, and his feet twitched nervously. What the hell was going on?<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Tajjis have sent us almost a hundred and fifty brand new warships from their dockyards,\u201d Major Achilles said. \u201cThey have not sent us the personnel to command them, though. We are to provide that. And right now, this fleet is very short on personnel.\u201d<\/p>\n

This \u201cfleet\u201d?<\/em> Aaron wondered. Since when had the Flotilla become a full-fledged fleet?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need more than warm bodies to fill command chairs, though,\u201d Achilles continued. \u201cWe need men and women who have proved themselves under fire, who have demonstrated ingenuity and resourcefulness and have the will to make hard decisions under pressure. Does that describe you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Aaron\u2019s heart leaped, and his mouth suddenly went dry. Commander Noah gave him a knowing look.<\/p>\n

\u201cI-I think so, sir,\u201d he stammered.<\/p>\n
