{"id":8995,"date":"2013-12-12T11:28:06","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T18:28:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=8995"},"modified":"2014-03-13T23:22:28","modified_gmt":"2014-03-14T06:22:28","slug":"operation-sb-the-infiltrator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/operation-sb-the-infiltrator\/","title":{"rendered":"Operation SB #1: The Infiltrator"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Title:\u00a0<\/strong>The Infiltrator<br \/>\n<strong>Genre:\u00a0<\/strong>Science Fiction<br \/>\n<strong>Word Count:<\/strong> 3,945<br \/>\n<strong>Time:<\/strong> 2 days<\/p>\n<p>For my first story for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=8989\">Operation Short Blitz<\/a>, I took a story idea that&#8217;s been bouncing around in my head for some time: that one of the best way for aliens to spy on us without being detected would be to send an infiltrator disguised as a homeless person.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to do something with this idea before, but like many of my short story attempts, it turned into something longer. \u00a0For that one, I tried to tell the story from the point of view of a normal twenty-something single guy living in an apartment close to where the alien infiltrator had his base. \u00a0But then it started turning into a story about the guy, leaving the alien as the impact character, and the story became about something else. \u00a0I eventually lost interest and trunked it.<\/p>\n<p>For this one, I kept it simple, telling it straight from the point of view of the alien. \u00a0I resisted the urge to put in extra subplots and instead focused on the core idea itself, making sure that everything in the story was directly connected to it. \u00a0That definitely helped to keep it short and focused.<\/p>\n<p>I think it turned out pretty well. \u00a0It was hard not to self-edit as I wrote it, which was part of the reason it took two days to write instead of one. \u00a0I started it on Saturday, tried to finish it but went for a two-hour midnight walk instead. \u00a0Picked it up on Monday and finished it up then.<\/p>\n<p>So now, after doing a quick proofread to fix typos and grammer, I&#8217;m going to put it on submission, sending it to Writers of the Future first and working my way down. \u00a0I don&#8217;t expect it to place, but maybe it will get honorable mention, which would be cool. \u00a0And who knows?
