{"id":8823,"date":"2013-09-01T02:13:39","date_gmt":"2013-09-01T08:13:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=8823"},"modified":"2013-09-01T02:19:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-01T08:19:40","slug":"back-in-provo-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/back-in-provo-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Back in Provo!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, do pageviews drop off sharply if you don&#8217;t blog for a while.<\/p>\n<p>So after spending the last couple of weeks visiting family across the country&#8211;literally across the country, from Massachusetts to Iowa&#8211;I&#8217;m back here in good old Provo, Utah, surrounded by the mountains once again (I can just hear my grandma &#8230; &#8220;what&#8217;s so great about a pile of rocks?&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Here were some of the highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seeing my parents (yay!) and spending some quality time with them.<\/li>\n<li>Babysitting my niece and nephews and spending time with that side of the family.<\/li>\n<li>Beach bumming on the Cape Cod National Seashore.<\/li>\n<li>Eating fried clams and lobster in Wellfleet at <a href=\"http:\/\/mobydicksrestaurant.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Moby Dick&#8217;s<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Playing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shanghai_rum\" target=\"_blank\">Shanghai<\/a> with my parents every night for a week and a half.<\/li>\n<li>Beating my brother-in-law at Settlers of Catan for the first time (he&#8217;s good!).<\/li>\n<li>Watching the entire Ken Burn&#8217;s Civil War documentary series.<\/li>\n<li>Touring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nausetlight.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nauset Light<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Three_Sisters_of_Nauset\" target=\"_blank\">the Three Sisters<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Touring the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.capecodchips.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Cod Potato Chip<\/a> factory.<\/li>\n<li>Hanging out with Mom in Downtown Hyannis.<\/li>\n<li>Acquiring an awesome new Indiana Jones style hat.<\/li>\n<li>Going to church with a bunch of high priests sporting crocs.<\/li>\n<li>Picking Monsanto corn and getting the whole corn experience.<\/li>\n<li>Browsing a bookshelf of Ursula K. Le Guin novels I&#8217;ve never read.<\/li>\n<li>Getting a bunch of awesome new story ideas (see previous post).<\/li>\n<li>Taking the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amtrak.com\/california-zephyr-train\" target=\"_blank\">California Zephyr<\/a> across the country&#8211;twice!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So yeah, it was a pretty awesome summer vacation.\u00a0 It&#8217;s good to be back in Utah, though.\u00a0 As much as I have a love\/hate relationship with Provo, Utah really is my favorite place on Earth.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve only been back a couple of hours, but it seems that it&#8217;s been an eventful two weeks since I&#8217;ve been gone.\u00a0 One of my former roommates ran off without paying his share of the utilities, after jacking up the AC all summer (lovely).\u00a0 After filing a police report, however, we may be able to get some of that back.<\/p>\n<p>My tomatoes have been growing like CRAZY.\u00a0 Only one has been harvested, but there are dozens hanging off of the vines.\u00a0 Anybody want to make salsa?<\/p>\n<p>As far as church goes, the ward boundaries have been completely rearranged.\u00a0 Seriously, the map looks like a shredder went to it.\u00a0 On our block, it&#8217;s us and the house two doors down from us (we think), then one of the apartments from Liberty Square, then another random house a block north of us.\u00a0 Crazy.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know yet if I&#8217;ll be sticking around in my current place for the fall or not.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a good situation, and the roommates are great, but the neighborhood is full of freshmen and sophomore college students.\u00a0 I need to find some more people my age to hang out with.\u00a0 Next month marks the beginning of the final year of my twenties, and I plan to make it count.<\/p>\n<p>I got a lot of work done on <strong>Star Wanderers: Reproach (Part VII)<\/strong> while traveling on the train, but I still need some of my first readers to give it another read-through before I&#8217;m confident enough to publish it.\u00a0 Hopefully, that shouldn&#8217;t take too long&#8211;I&#8217;m shooting for publication before the end of September.\u00a0 Also, the print edition of <strong>Stars of Blood and Glory<\/strong> will hopefully be finalized before the end of the month as well.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s just about it for now.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll leave you with some folk music from the Caucasus Mountains, this time on the accordion:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E9RhqJOS0H0\" height=\"480\" width=\"640\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Rousing stuff.\u00a0 I wish I could play the accordion like that.<\/p>\n<p>Take care!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, do pageviews drop off sharply if you don&#8217;t blog for a while.
