{"id":7379,"date":"2012-06-05T09:41:04","date_gmt":"2012-06-05T14:41:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=7379"},"modified":"2012-06-05T09:41:04","modified_gmt":"2012-06-05T14:41:04","slug":"trope-tuesday-dreaming-of-things-to-come","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/trope-tuesday-dreaming-of-things-to-come\/","title":{"rendered":"Trope Tuesday: Dreaming of Things to Come"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Atrapasuenos-background-free.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-7380\" title=\"dreamcatcher\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dreamcatcher-200x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dreamcatcher-200x400.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dreamcatcher-70x140.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/dreamcatcher.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When a character in a story <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DreamTropes\" target=\"_blank\">has a dream<\/a>, there&#8217;s almost certainly a reason for it. \u00a0If it&#8217;s not thrown in just to show how <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/BadDreams\" target=\"_blank\">scarred<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/AnxietyDreams\" target=\"_blank\">tortured<\/a> he is (or alternately, how <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/EroticDream\" target=\"_blank\">repressed<\/a> he is), chances are good he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DreamingOfThingsToCome\" target=\"_blank\">dreaming of things to come<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a <em>huge<\/em>\u00a0fan of this trope, as you may be able to tell if you&#8217;ve read any of my books. \u00a0It&#8217;s a special form of <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/Foreshadowing\" target=\"_blank\">foreshadowing<\/a> that lends a mystical, otherworldly flavor. \u00a0It&#8217;s also something that we can relate to: how often have you had a dream that was so powerful, so moving, that it just <em>had<\/em>\u00a0to mean something?<\/p>\n<p>When played straight, this trope often implies some sort of <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DreamWeaver\" target=\"_blank\">all-seeing being<\/a> who <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/PropheciesAreAlwaysRight\" target=\"_blank\">sent the dream<\/a> on purpose. \u00a0However, this doesn&#8217;t have to be the case. \u00a0I often find it much more satisfying when we don&#8217;t know where the dream came from. \u00a0It&#8217;s very easy to shatter the sense of wonder by over-explaining things, especially when it comes to the dream world.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the character doesn&#8217;t just have to dream of things to come to capture that sense of wonder. \u00a0They can also <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DreamingOfTimesGoneBy\" target=\"_blank\">dream of times gone by<\/a>, discovering something previously unknown about the past, or <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/DreamingTheTruth\" target=\"_blank\">dream of the truth<\/a>, working through a previously unsolvable problem in their sleep. \u00a0The mystical, otherworldly flavor still holds true for all of them.<\/p>\n<p>As you might expect, this is a fairly common trope in fantasy. \u00a0Some prominent examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lord of the Rings<\/li>\n<li>The Silmarillion<\/li>\n<li>A Game of Thrones<\/li>\n<li>The Black Cauldron<\/li>\n<li>American Gods<\/li>\n<li>Most of the Redwall books<\/li>\n<li>Dragonsflight<\/li>\n<li>Watership down<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Why is so popular? \u00a0Even though dreaming is such a common, universal experience, it&#8217;s still shrouded in mystery. \u00a0It resonates deeply with us because we can all relate to it, and at the same time it opens all sorts of windows into the fantastic because there is so little we understand.<\/p>\n<p>Like I said before, this is sort of a pet trope for me. \u00a0Consciously or not, I tend to throw in at least one dream sequence in every book I write. \u00a0It seems to have worked pretty well so far, so I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll be changing that anytime soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When a character in a story has a dream, there&#8217;s almost certainly a reason for it. \u00a0If it&#8217;s not thrown in just to show how scarred or tortured he is (or alternately, how repressed he is), chances are good he&#8217;s dreaming of things to come.
