{"id":7156,"date":"2012-04-03T14:27:24","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T19:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=7156"},"modified":"2012-11-06T07:22:35","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T12:22:35","slug":"trope-tuesday-abduction-is-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/trope-tuesday-abduction-is-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Trope Tuesday: Abduction is Love"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/NMGEfs4kiyY\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In real life, abduction is an awful, violent thing that we hope would never happen to us or anyone we know. \u00a0But in fiction, the <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/RuleOfRomantic\" target=\"_blank\">Rule of Romantic<\/a> can make abduction the <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/AbductionIsLove\" target=\"_blank\">basis of a wonderful, heartwarming love story<\/a>&#8230;<a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/YMMV\" target=\"_blank\">at least for some of us<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is actually a more common trope than you might think. \u00a0It&#8217;s the underlying premise for Beauty and the Beast, though <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/Disneyfication\" target=\"_blank\">Disney rewrote that part out of it<\/a>. \u00a0It&#8217;s a major plot element in <em>Watership Down<\/em>,\u00a0as well as <em>The Courtship of Princess Leia<\/em>. \u00a0More recently, <em>Twilight<\/em>\u00a0featured a few variations on this trope, though considering the source, that probably isn&#8217;t surprising.<\/p>\n<p>In G and PG rated versions, this often leads to <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/AndNowYouMustMarryMe\" target=\"_blank\">And Now You Must Marry Me<\/a>. \u00a0In PG-13 and R rated versions, leads to <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/RapeIsLove\" target=\"_blank\">Rape Is Love<\/a>, with many <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/UnfortunateImplications\" target=\"_blank\">unfortunate implications<\/a>. \u00a0Due to the violent nature of the story, it often involves a lot of <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/SlapSlapKiss\" target=\"_blank\">Slap-Slap-Kiss<\/a>. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/StockholmSyndrome\" target=\"_blank\">Stockholm Syndrome<\/a>, the psychological phenomenon whereby victims of abduction develop an emotional connection with their captors, is the overarching theme, making any abduction love story a <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/AMatchMadeInStockholm\" target=\"_blank\">match made in Stockholm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the West, this trope tends to be a lot less prominent than it used to be. \u00a0However, if you look at the trappings of our marriage customs, you start to notice some disturbing trends that point to a time when abduction-as-romance was much more common. \u00a0For example, what was the original function of the best man at a wedding? \u00a0Quite possibly, it was to keep the bride from escaping (or being rescued). \u00a0And why does the groom whisk the bride away to a remote, isolated place to consummate the marriage? \u00a0To evade the bride&#8217;s angry family, of course.<\/p>\n<p>Here in Georgia, this trope is alive and well, not just in fiction but in real life&#8211;seriously. \u00a0It&#8217;s called <em>motatseba<\/em>, and is often discussed with a wink and a nod. \u00a0In the family that&#8217;s hosting me, the mother married her husband after he abducted her, then bore him four children. \u00a0Now, they both seem to remember it rather fondly.<\/p>\n<p>This is such a bizarre tradition that I&#8217;m going to dedicate an entire post to it&#8230;after I figure out just <a href=\"http:\/\/tvtropes.org\/pmwiki\/pmwiki.php\/Main\/ValuesDissonance\" target=\"_blank\">what the hell<\/a>\u00a0is going on. \u00a0Seriously, I can barely make sense of the practice&#8211;it&#8217;s like a twisted game of tag involving sex and arranged marriage. \u00a0How it can possibly lead to love&#8230;that&#8217;s what I&#8217;m trying to figure out.<\/p>\n<p>However, I&#8217;m sure it involves some interesting variation of this trope.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In real life, abduction is an awful, violent thing that we hope would never happen to us or anyone we know. \u00a0But in fiction, the Rule of Romantic can make abduction the basis of a wonderful, heartwarming love story&#8230;at least for some of us.
