{"id":3741,"date":"2011-01-01T12:17:08","date_gmt":"2011-01-01T19:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=3741"},"modified":"2011-01-01T12:18:42","modified_gmt":"2011-01-01T19:18:42","slug":"the-obligatory-new-years-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/the-obligatory-new-years-post\/","title":{"rendered":"The Obligatory New Year&#8217;s Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/photos\/index.php?showimage=233\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/photos\/images\/20080105001510_4jan08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"205\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a>So I guess I was lying when I said that my last post was the second to  last post of the year.\u00a0 Oh well&#8211;better late than never, I suppose.<\/p>\n<p>Last night at a party, I told someone that 2010 wasn&#8217;t that bad&#8230;but it was also the worst year of my life.\u00a0 I suppose that&#8217;s true: I got kicked out of my Washington DC internship, almost failed all my classes, spent most of the year unemployed, and never quite achieved full financial independence.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, I made a bunch of new friends, started two novels and finished another, published an article about the BYU sf&amp;f community that&#8217;s garnered some major attention, and generally had a fun time, in spite of the setbacks.<\/p>\n<p>So really, what is there to complain about?\u00a0 Not much.\u00a0 Still, I&#8217;m glad it&#8217;s over.<\/p>\n<p>As far as new year&#8217;s resolutions go, I&#8217;ve found that the best way to do them is to make one or two of them&#8211;otherwise, come February, you lose steam and none of them get done.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a couple private resolutions, but here&#8217;s the big one I want to focus on:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Resolved: Read a minimum of one book per week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I made this resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=116\">back in 2008<\/a>, but it only lasted until mid-March or so&#8211;not so much because I wasn&#8217;t reading, but because I didn&#8217;t understand <em>how<\/em> I read.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not the kind of person who finishes every book they pick up; in fact, I only finish about 3\/4s of them.\u00a0 If I don&#8217;t think a book is good, I stop reading it.\u00a0 Sometimes, even if a book isn&#8217;t bad, I end up putting it down just because I lose interest.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also really picky; I don&#8217;t usually read any fiction that isn&#8217;t fantasy or science fiction, because the real world bores me.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, though, if I want to write well, I&#8217;ve got to be constantly reading.\u00a0 And as I&#8217;ve written book reviews for this blog, I&#8217;ve found that reading widely has helped me to hone my craft.<\/p>\n<p>So anyway, that&#8217;s my major resolution for this year.\u00a0 Other things I would like to do:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 )<\/strong> get Army fit<br \/>\n<strong>2 )<\/strong> live in another country<br \/>\n<strong>3 )<\/strong> write a novel entirely in longhand, with actual pen and paper<br \/>\n<strong>4 )<\/strong> get three new publications (two are already in the works)<br \/>\n<strong>5 )<\/strong> fall in love with someone&#8211;and then make it grow into <em>real <\/em>love<br \/>\n<strong>6 )<\/strong> get a MIDI keyboard and compose original 8-bit music<br \/>\n<strong>7 )<\/strong> get a digital SLR and become an amateur astral photographer<br \/>\n<strong>8 )<\/strong> get an agent<br \/>\n<strong>9 )<\/strong> land a publishing deal<br \/>\n<strong>10) <\/strong>honestly, it&#8217;s just an honor to be read<\/p>\n<p>Do these goals sound a little outlandish?\u00a0 Sure&#8230;but who cares?\u00a0 We&#8217;ve got a whole new year in front of us; anything can happen between now and December 31st!<\/p>\n<p>Happy New Year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I guess I was lying when I said that my last post was the second to last post of the year.\u00a0 Oh well&#8211;better late than never, I suppose.
