{"id":1678,"date":"2010-03-06T15:16:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-06T20:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=1678"},"modified":"2010-03-06T15:58:46","modified_gmt":"2010-03-06T20:58:46","slug":"im-published","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/im-published\/","title":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m published!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/leadingedgemagazine.com\/Images\/Covers\/cover58.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"261\" height=\"389\" \/>That&#8217;s right&#8211;my first published story just came out in <a href=\"http:\/\/leadingedgemagazine.com\/IssuePages\/Issue58.html#\">issue 58 of The Leading Edge<\/a>. \u00a0I am happy to say that after three years of formally pursuing my career as a writer, I am now a published author!<\/p>\n<p>The story is titled\u00a0<em>Decision LZ1527,<\/em> and it&#8217;s about a guy asking a girl out on a date&#8211;as told from the point of view of the little men inside his head piloting his body like a starship. I really like the tagline in the table of contents: &#8220;A man, a woman, and a whole crew of matchmakers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Full disclosure: I submitted this story after I joined the staff as a volunteer slushpile reader. \u00a0Most of the editors for this issue are pretty good friends of mine (including the Production Director, who&#8217;s one of my most trusted alpha readers). \u00a0I submitted it under a pseudonym, however, so most of the staff didn&#8217;t know it was mine until after they&#8217;d accepted it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mjosh.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1684\" title=\"cover-small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/cover-small-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"190\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/cover-small-190x300.jpg 190w, https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/cover-small.jpg 342w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 190px) 100vw, 190px\" \/><\/a><em>The Leading Edge<\/em> is known for the excellent quality of its illustrations, and I&#8217;m happy to say that I lucked out with with the artist the editors picked for my story! \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mjosh.com\">Josh McGill<\/a> is a graphic designer and aspiring children&#8217;s book illustrator. \u00a0He&#8217;s done art for issues 53 and 55 of <em>The Leading Edge.<\/em> The picture on the right is the one he did for the front page of my story. \u00a0I must say, I&#8217;m impressed!<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/leadingedgemagazine.com\">The Leading Edge<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/leadingedgemagazine.com\"> <\/a>is a semi-professional small press science fiction and fantasy magazine affiliated with BYU. \u00a0It&#8217;s been in publication since the early 80s, when Marion K. &#8220;Doc&#8221; Smith&#8217;s famous &#8220;class that wouldn&#8217;t die&#8221; got together and started it, along with <a href=\"http:\/\/quarksff.org\">Quark <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/ltue.org\">LTUE<\/a>. \u00a0If you would like to support the magazine (and read my story!) you can purchase a copy of issue 58 at the following link:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/leadingedgemagazine.com\/IssuePages\/Issue58.html#\">Issue 58: &#8220;Redemption Songs&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mjosh.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1693\" title=\"back-small\" src=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/back-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/back-small.jpg 164w, https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/back-small-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 100vw, 164px\" \/><\/a>Lot&#8217;s of people dream about getting published, but it takes a lot of hard work and rejection to actually make it happen. \u00a0As writers, though, we tend to be harder on ourselves than we ought to be. \u00a0It took almost four years for <em>Decision LZ1527<\/em> to find its way into print, but it did. \u00a0That&#8217;s enough to make the rest of the process worth it.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s hope it&#8217;s the first of many!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>That&#8217;s right&#8211;my first published story just came out in issue 58 of The Leading Edge. \u00a0I am happy to say that after three years of formally pursuing my career as a writer, I am now a published author!
