[NOTE: this is part seven in a series of posts lifted from the\u00a0quark message boards<\/a> where I recently GM’d a game of\u00a0Werewolf<\/a>. \u00a0The theme was Final Fantasy 6, one of my favorite RPGs of all time. \u00a0To see the other posts, click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

WARNING: there\u00a0will<\/em> be spoilers here, and lots of them, so if you haven’t played Final Fantasy 6, do yourself a favor and play the game before reading on!]<\/p>\n

Unaware of Terra’s demise, the party arrives at Jidoor and begin to plan their strategy for infiltrating the Empire…<\/em><\/p>\n

CELES: So…how we gonna get there? The Empire’s on the continent to
\nthe south. No boats go there…<\/p>\n

They make their way to Owzer’s house uptown–home to the Impresario.<\/em><\/p>\n

IMPRESARIO: Maria!?<\/p>\n

CELES: Are you talking to me?<\/p>\n

IMPRESARIO: Sorry…my mistake. Wow, you could pass for Maria in a
\nheartbeat! Hoo boy, now I really am in trouble…<\/p>\n

Impresario leaves.<\/em><\/p>\n

LOCKE: CELES looks like Maria…?<\/p>\n

A man is at the entrance of Owzer’s home.<\/em><\/p>\n

MAN: You’re the spittin’ image of Maria! Huh? Haven’t you heard of
\nher? She’s a famous opera singer! That PERSON dropped it off. He’s
\nthe directory of operas here. Everyone just calls him “Impresario.”
\nHe’s been in a tizzy since that letter arrived.<\/p>\n

(Letter) “My Dear Maria, I want you for my wife. I’m coming for you…
\nThe Wandering Gambler”<\/p>\n

LOCKE: Who’s this “Wandering Gambler”…?<\/p>\n

MAN: You born on a farm, son?<\/p>\n

cue music…<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n

A black jack-playing, world-traveling casino-dwelling free spirit…<\/p>\n

MAN: SETZER! The owner of the world’s fastest airship.<\/p>\n

CELES: If we could get that airship, we’d make the Empire in no time.<\/p>\n

LOCKE: Let’s set up a meeting…with SETZER…<\/p>\n

The party meets with the Impresario. Together, they agree to have Celes and Maria switch places. When Setzer arrives in the middle of the opera to abduct her, she will let the others up into his airship, where they hope to convince him to join their cause.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/p>\n

The opera begins. All goes according to plan. In the tower scene before the climactic battle,\u00a0Celes sings for her lost love, Draco.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Aria de Mezzo Caraterre.<\/p>\n

NARRATOR: The forces of the West fell,
\nand Maria’s castle was taken.
\nPrince Ralse, of the East,
\ntook her hand by force,
\nbut she never stopped yearning for Draco…<\/p>\n

CELES is standing on the set in costume, singing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh my hero, so far away now.
\nWill I ever see your smile?
\nLove goes away, like night into day.
\nIt’s just a fading dream.<\/p>\n

I’m the darkness, you’re the stars.
\nOur love is brighter than the sun.
\nFor eternity, for me there can be,
\nOnly you, my chosen one…<\/p>\n

Must I forget you? Our solemn promise?
\nWill autumn take the place of spring?
\nWhat shall I do? I’m lost without you.
\nSpeak to me once more!<\/p>\n

Draco appears and dances with Maria.<\/em><\/p>\n

DRACO: Come, Maria. Follow my lead.<\/p>\n

Draco then vanishes. Maria walks
\nup some stairs, holding a bouquet of flowers.<\/em><\/p>\n

…We must part now, my life goes on.
\nBut my heart won’t give you up.
\nEre I walk away, let me hear you say
\nI meant as much to you….<\/p>\n

So gently, you touched my heart.
\nI will be forever yours.
\nCome what may, I won’t age a day,
\nI’ll wait for you, always…<\/p>\n

Celes throws the bouquet of flowers over the balcony.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/p>\n

The ploy works! Setzer arrives right on schedule, abducting Celes in the middle of the climactic battle between Ralse and Draco.<\/p>\n

Aboard the airship, Celes lets down a rope, allowing the other members of the party to climb aboard. Together, they confront Setzer.<\/em><\/p>\n

CELES: SETZER, we need your help. We have to go to Vector. We need
\nthis ship to get there.<\/p>\n

SETZER: Look, if you’re not Maria, I don’t want you aboard.<\/p>\n

CELES: Wait! We were told your ship is the finest vessel in the
\nworld.<\/p>\n

LOCKE: And that you were the world’s most notorious gambler…<\/p>\n

EDGAR: I’m King EDGAR of Figaro. If you cooperate, you’ll be well
\nrewarded.<\/p>\n

SETZER: Phew… The Empire’s made me a rich man.<\/p>\n

CELES: Stop thinking of yourself. Many towns and villages have been
\nsmashed by the Empire.<\/p>\n

LOCKE: The Empire’s also totally rotten! It’s using magic to enslave
\nthe world.<\/p>\n

EDGAR: The Empire and my realm were allies…until recently.<\/p>\n

CELES: We all hate the Empire for the same reasons. That’s why…<\/p>\n

SETZER: You know, you’re even more stunning than Maria.<\/p>\n

CELES: ????<\/p>\n

SETZER: Enough! If you… If Celes becomes my wife, I’ll help.
\nOtherwise…<\/p>\n

LOCKE: WHAT! Are you stupid!?<\/p>\n

CELES: We haven’t any choice.<\/p>\n

SETZER: Yes! It’s settled!<\/p>\n

CELES: But I have conditions…<\/p>\n

CELES gets a coin from Edgar.<\/em><\/p>\n

CELES: We’ll decide with a coin toss. If it’s heads, you’ll help us.
\nIf it’s tails, I’ll go with you. Well, Mr. Gambler…?<\/p>\n

SETZER: Oho! Fine! I accept!<\/p>\n

LOCKER: Listen to yourself! CELES…you can’t become his wife! You
\njust can’t!<\/p>\n

CELES: Ready?<\/p>\n

CELES tosses the coin.<\/em><\/p>\n

CELES: I win! Now, honor your part of the bargain!<\/p>\n

SETZER: How…unusual! A codin with identical sides…!<\/p>\n

SABIN: That coin…!? EDGAR!!! Don’t tell me…!<\/p>\n

CELES: I think you’ve been hustled, Mr. Gambler.<\/p>\n

SETZER: Ha! How low can you get?! I love it! Alright, I’ll help
\nyou. Nothing to lose but my life… My life is a chip in your pile!
\nAnte up!<\/p>\n

Together with their new ally, the party flies to the southern continent, where they sneak into Vector and infiltrate the Empire’s dreaded Magiteck Research Facility!<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em><\/p>\n

As they break in, however, an unlucky guard happened to run into them in the hallway. He was no match for a samurai warrior; Cyan made quick work of him.<\/em><\/p>\n

Innocents lynch Jerle, a mafioso.<\/span><\/p>\n

NIGHT<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, deep in the Magiteck Research Facility…<\/em><\/p>\n

KEFKA: I’m all-powerful! Hee, hee, haw! I’m collecting Espers! I’m
\nextracting magic! And…and…I’ll restore the statues!<\/p>\n
