If nothing else, it should be entertaining. They started with <i>Frankenstein,<\/i> then spent some time on William Gibson, and recently went through <i>the Martian Chronicles<\/i> by Ray Bradbury. They really do a good job of getting to the heart of classic science fiction.<\/p>\n<p>It reminds me of a Trope Tuesday post I did a while ago about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onelowerlight.com\/writing\/?p=7862\">settling the (final) frontier.<\/a> The whole idea of restarting humanity by leaving Earth behind is one of those things that draws me to science fiction the most. Passive Guy covered it twice, once for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepassivevoice.com\/2018\/02\/bn-to-save-40-million-following-new-layoffs\/\">the Publishers Weekly article,<\/a> and again with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepassivevoice.com\/2018\/02\/barnes-noble-inc-layoffs\/\">comments by the employees on The Layoff.<\/a> There&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/madgeniusclub.com\/2018\/02\/14\/bn-strives-for-what\/\">a lively discussion<\/a> on Mad Genius Club on the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Felix J. Torres, who often has great nuggets of wisdom, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepassivevoice.com\/2018\/02\/bn-to-save-40-million-following-new-layoffs\/#comment-410029\">shared his insights<\/a> in a comment on The Passive Voice:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2013 Those experienced \u201cleads\u201d is where a company\u2019s corporate memory really resides. The people who\u2019ve been through the wars and seen it all, who know where the scripts and handbooks end and common sense crisis management and experience takes over. They are lobotomizing operations.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 If the difference between \u201clead\u201d pay and entry level is the only thing between them and bankruptcy\u2026 Well, they might as well file right now. $40M in \u201csavings\u201d? That\u2019s less than $80,000 per store. For that they disrupt people\u2019s lives and cripple their operations? Smacks of desperation.
