\u201cYes,\u201d said Jane, sighing. \u201cIvosh, allow me to introduce my friend Sam. Sam, Ivosh.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis man is your friend?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, he is. We knew each other at Earthfleet Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ivosh\u2019s pursed lips quickly turned to a wan smile, and his hair went from red to brown in almost an instant. \u201cForgive me for the misunderstanding, my good sir. It is truly a pleasure to meet you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The David Bowie look must have been an attempt to intimidate me, because Ivosh dropped it almost immediately\u2014or at least fast-forwarded a couple of decades. He offered his hand and probably would have kissed me on the cheek, if I weren\u2019t so careful to keep my distance.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam is something of a mercenary,\u201d Jane explained. \u201cYou want someone dead, pay him well enough, and he\u2019ll get the job done. Unless someone else pays him to turn on you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI prefer \u2018man of fortune.\u2019 And contrary to what you might think, Jane, I never go back on my word.\u201d<\/p>\n

She rolled her eyes, probably because I didn\u2019t deny being a mercenary. At the time, though, I thought it was my honesty she was questioning. That made me a little touchy.<\/p>\n

\u201cName one time that I\u2019ve lied to you, Jane. One time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you forgetting that you stood by and let the slavers take me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s different. I was working for someone else. He betrayed you, not me.\u201d<\/p>\n
