\u201cUh, hi,\u201d I said, taking the seat next to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou!\u201d she said. Her eyes fixated on me like a targeting lock, and I could tell I was about to get burned.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey, it wasn\u2019t my fault,\u201d I tried to explain. \u201cIn fact, I\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than a thousand men, women, and children are slaves thanks to you. You should be ashamed of yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt looks like you made out all right, though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her glare only got hotter. \u201cDo you have any idea what it\u2019s like to be sold on an auction block? To stand there like a piece of chattel while hundreds of aliens bid on you? It was the most degrading and humiliating experience of my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I had been there, I would have bought you myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

I meant that if I\u2019d caught up to her in time, I would have spared her the humiliation by buying her off before the auction. But I\u2019ve never been smooth around women, human or otherwise.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat came out wrong,\u201d I said quickly. \u201cWhat I meant was\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou pig,\u201d she said, her eyes blazing with rage. \u201cYou bottom-sucking, piss-drinking, retrograde cretin!\u201d<\/p>\n

I took a deep breath and sighed. \u201cLet\u2019s start over, okay? I\u2019m sorry, Jane\u2014really, I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her glare cooled, but not by much. She folded her arms and narrowed her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd what about the other Setarni? The families that were broken up? The children who will probably be slaves for the rest of their lives?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, but that wasn\u2019t my fault. The captain sold them out before I could do anything to stop him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t tell me he\u2019s here with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe isn\u2019t,\u201d I said quickly. \u201cWe got into an altercation with the Zan, and I handed him over before bugging out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jane smirked. \u201cBetrayal for betrayal. I suppose that\u2019s justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
