\u201cExcellent men,\u201d her father said as he sat back down across from her. \u201cIf only we had a hundred more like them.\u201d The door hissed shut, and the car rose up and headed for the residential district of the station.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t have to get that last promise from them,\u201d Sara said, folding her arms. \u201cThat was a bit melodramatic.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerhaps,\u201d he said, \u201cbut they won\u2019t soon forget it, will they?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI suppose not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The floor fell out below their car as it rose up the high ceiling of the station\u2019s central dome. Sara recognized the familiar gardens and parks that were so characteristic of the upper class neighborhoods of the Colony. Young mothers pushed strollers past the carefully manicured hedges and picturesque streams. Leafy green trees shimmered in the sunlight that shone through the carefully tinted windows overhead. From high above, however, Sara could see that every house and hedge was virtually identical, and the streams all ran in endless circles, doubling back on themselves. It was a sheltered world apart from reality\u2014an artificial imitation of the peace and prosperity that had once been common throughout the system. Though she\u2019d grown up within that illusion, she had no desire to stay there.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo either of them have top-level clearances?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d said her father. \u201cAs far as they know, you\u2019re just another delegate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sara sighed. \u201cThat\u2019s going to make things difficult, if I have to keep my mission a secret from them.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBe discreet. They\u2019ll never notice a thing, if you do it right.\u201d<\/p>\n

If I do it right<\/em>. That was the trick, wasn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll do my best.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat might not be good enough,\u201d said her father. \u201cThe Colony may not survive if you fail.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d said Sara. \u201cI know.\u201d <\/p>\n

They sat in silence as the carefully manicured illusion of prosperity passed far below.<\/p>\n
