\u201cCaptain, we have incoming fire!\u201d Sterling shouted. Sure enough, an alarm sounded in the cramped cockpit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see it. Hang on!\u201d<\/p>\n

On the main screen, a steady stream of small projectile fire arced towards them along the enemy\u2019s vector. I hope none of those shots slips past us to hit the convoy<\/em>, James thought.<\/p>\n

\u201cFive seconds to impact,\u201d said Sterling. \u201cThree, two, one\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

A high-pitched squeal sounded from deep within the walls of the gunboat as the RPV shield vaporized the incoming projectiles.<\/p>\n

\u201cShields down thirty percent,\u201d said Sterling, his voice rising. \u201cForty\u2014no, fifty and climbing!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEngage our reserves, and make sure the shields hold,\u201d said James, firing the last of the thrusters. \u201cEngine burn at full throttle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Captain, we\u2019re on a collision course!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know,\u201d said James, gripping the piloting stick with clammy hands. His stomach churned as the gee forces rose noticeably, despite of the gravitic dampers. The ETA on his display dropped to fifteen seconds\u2014hopefully, that would be enough to keep the shields from blowing up in their faces before they made contact with the enemy.<\/p>\n

\u201cLone Spear! Lone Spear!<\/em>\u201d came the commander\u2019s voice over the intercom. \u201cPull back and regroup at once! Do you copy?\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too late now<\/em>, James thought to himself. At least this time, they weren\u2019t the ones who had shot first.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwelve seconds to impact,\u201d said Sterling, his voice raw and full of fear. \u201cWe need to pull up!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNegative, Ensign.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2014but we\u2019re going to die!\u201d<\/p>\n

We all have to go sometime.<\/em><\/p>\n
