Ruined, or made that much more awesome?

What I really want to know is what all of this actually means. Is there any significance if one or more of the trio lives, while the other(s) die(s)? Does it make a difference who fulfills the romantic subplot? Now that I know about this trope, I want to play with it!

But overall, I think the main thing is that it hits on different aspects of the female experience. Maybe that's the key--depending on what you want your story to say about women, that's what makes the difference.

I wonder if this trope is more prevalent in eastern (read: Japanese) cultures and media than western ones. Thinking back on stuff I've played/watched, while western artists do use it a lot it seems to be really prevalent in Japanese stuff. Maybe it's a weird duality of the innocent girl and the maniac pixie whatever girl that they seem to love so much.

Though now that I think about it, Silent Hill 2 (read: best game ever?) actually uses this trope in some super clever ways to push the story forward. How was this always in front of my face and I didn't get it?

Also, I wonder how this works with the whole Eve/Lilith idea in female sociology. I guess Eve in that is both the wife and the virgin, and Lilith the seductress (obviously). Huh.

Just blathering words; good post. And now every Square-Enix JRPG is ruined forever because I see the tropes. And all the Persona games too.

And dammit I made a really bad DOS dating game in High School and even IT had this trope in it! I'm part of the problem! :P
