In the summer in Amman, there are weddings and marriage parties every night, and almost every one of them puts on a fireworks show. It's really cool just to sit on the roof and watch the fireworks go off in different parts of the city. The people use fireworks because it's illegal to shoot off firearms; before the law, people would shoot their guns in the air to show how happy they were, but this led to a lot of unnecessary deaths and injuries, so the government forbid it. When we in the West see Arabs shooting off guns in the air, we tend to be really intimidated by it, but at least some of the time they do it just as an expression of collective excitement and happiness--not to look tough and menacing.
