Battlements and Glacis
Battlements and Glacis
Another view of Karak Castle. The apron shaped shield that covers the hill below the castle at an angle is called a glacis, and it was built to make it harder for attackers to dig underneath the battlements and collapse the castle that way. Renau de Chatillon used to execute people by throwing them off of the wall that Katie is standing on. He was a very sadistic man. The hill in the background is the hill from which Saladin launched missiles at the castle during the siege.
