This is the holiest part of the Church of the Nativity, an ancient church that marks the traditional site of Jesus' birth. The stone that is being venerated here is supposed to be the stone on which Jesus was born. I've heard that the Crimean war was started over a dispute of possession of this site. Like the Church of the Holy Sepelchre, many denominations have a stake in this church, and pilgrims come frequently to worship at this place, though it's not nearly as crowded as the Church of the Holy Sepelchre.
