Marriage Equals...
Many of the stop signs in my neighborhood have these stickers pasted on them. Usually around here, if you see a sticker or a tag on a stop sign, it'll say 'war' or 'Bush' or something unintelligible. I think it's interesting to see these stickers, because Massachusetts will soon have a referendum question on the gay marriage issue. As it stands, the state supreme court has decided to make gay marriage legal, but the voter referendum will decide whether or not that will stand, and believe it or not, the opposing side has quite some force out here. I'm not sure which way it will go, and I haven't kept up with it all that much, but I think there's some significant momentum to define marriage along heterosexual terms. The pro gay marriage side is extremely vocal out here, but from what I've seen, they only seem to dominate in certain clustered communities, such as Northampton and the five colleges area. Out in the country, and out in most of Western Massachusetts suburbia besides the Amherst/Northampton area, the people don't seem all that enthusiastic about it. We'll find out how it rolls when the question is presented on the ballot.
