The Tail End of Massachusetts
I was up in Northampton today, America's very best college town, and I was just soaking in all the liberal weirdness up there. It's kind of funny--in Utah, we live in a bubble and we know it, but in Hampshire county and the five colleges area, they also live in a bubble but they think that they're multicultural and open to all kinds of diverse ideas and whatnot. The bubbles are polar opposites, at least as far as politics goes, but they are still both bubbles that keep you from looking the rest of the world in its face without making a judgment call. In some ways, Utah's bubble is thinner than Northampton's. Anyways, just a few thoughts of mine as I revisit this place where I went to high school. Here are what the bumper stickers say: 'love makes a family,' 'discontent is the highest form of patriotism,' 'treehugger,' 'keep abortion legal,' 'there is no violent solution,' 'boycott cruelty, go vegan,' 'we must be the change we wish to see in the world,' 'animals are little people in fur coats,' 'what if the hokey pokey IS what it's all about?' the equal rights (read: gay rights) movement symbol, '01.20.09: Bush's last day.'
